Opportunity

While there are multiple ways of using plants as decoration like above...

What if we can incorporate plants with what they do best and create a functional curtain, providing shading with a sustainable solution that also promotes well-being?

Discovering the Spanish Moss

I start my journey of looking for the plants that would be optimal as a curtain and found out about Spanish Moss

All-About-Spanish-Moss.jpg

Spanish moss fits all my design criteria of:

  • Lightweight:

    • It is an air plant (perennial epiphytic herb) which means it does not need heavy soil or growing surfaces

  • Likes sunlight

    • making it a good choice to be placed in front of windows

  • Low maintenance

    • Do not need a lot of water and it's slow-growing

Quick Protype and Interview

Questions and concerns from interviewees:

  • Is there a more efficient way of watering other than going manually with a spray bottle?

  • What if some how a part of the Spanish moss dies? Do I need to replace the entire curtain?

Like a regular curtain, users can let the curtain drape by itself for maximum shading or tie the curtain to the side to expose sunlight.

To water the Spanish Moss, user simply have to press on the switch on button to activate the ultrasonic mister once a day, and fill up the water tank once a week.

A single strain of Spanish Moss can be easily replace/remove with the hook on system on the top casing.
